Being a small family run business we feel we are in no hurry and have all the time in the world to produce quality before quantity. This allows us to be very patient in the gathering and processing our timber.
From time to time we may have some recycled, reclaimed wood to hand, but generally we gather then carefully select the majority of our timber form our native well established woodlands and hedgerows.
We thoroughly enjoy what we do, whether it’s the gratifying feeling of just being in a forest somewhere early morning, soaking up the energy and nature that surrounds us, or the wondering, the anticipating not quite knowing what beauty may lay within the wood we have just gathered.
Air dried -V- Kiln dried
Splitting the lumber that’s the exciting part, we split then select only the best pieces of timber with lots of character for drying. We air dry almost all of our timber rather than kiln dry, we prefer this method as it produces a timber that’s is worked better and has more "life" to it than kiln dried, we know this because we also use this timber in the construction of our wedding rings.
We do however process one of our timbers in the age old tested method. Our Blackthorn wood is smoked. We cover the wood with lard sometimes butter and place it up the fireplace chimney for a few weeks, this is how our Irish ancestors processed their wood to create the Irish fighting stick the “shillelagh”
Selecting only the best
Once we have air dried the timber we then cut and only take forward to the final process the very best pieces of timber, only timber with unique and defining characters.
Knowing where the wood comes from, knowing how the wood we are using held its place in Irish history, the stories behind it, Irish folklore, that’s what makes it just that little bit more special for us.
Because we only use the very best wood when we are making one of our wedding rings for our customers, www.eireecorings.ie we would take a little guess that anybody wanting to use wood from our store to create something special would also only want the very best wood to work with.
Stabilization method
Having selected only the best cuts of timber we then stabilize it under vacuum. Having tried and tested many different types of stabilization products over the years we stumbled upon and only use a premium professional grade heat cured stabilizing resin “Cactus Juice” for stabilizing and hardening all our wood. Far superior to any typical home stabilizing solutions such as Minwax wood hardener or polyurethane, Cactus juice produces results that are truly amazing! especially on our beautiful, punky, spalted woods otherwise just too soft to work with! The finished stabilized wood is gorgeous, it is always rich in color, works very well “no more chip outs” and will take any finishing polish or wax
